ABOUT ABOUT

This program is appropriate for speech language pathologists and students
enrolled in a speech language pathology program who are interested in
and/or are currently working with patients who have suffered TBI.

Program Summary
Each year, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) contributes to a substantial number
of deaths and cases of permanent disability. In fact, TBI is a contributing
factor to a third (30.5%) of all injury-related deaths in the United States. On
average, of the 1.7 million people who sustain a TBI each year in this
country: 52,000 people die and 275,000 people are hospitalized
(http://www.cdc.gov/TraumaticBrainInjury/severe.html). Individuals with
traumatic brain injury (TBI) present with many obstacles, and it takes a very
dedicated team of caring and talented professionals to support them and to
facilitate a recovery that will result in a successful return to their lives at
home, in the community, and in a work or school setting. The purpose of
this presentation is to educate SLP professionals on the complex brain
injury patient and the role they play in their recovery across the continuum
of care in all settings. Topics include an overview of anatomy and
physiology, effect of TBI on communication and cognitive functions,
evaluation tools, goal setting and functional treatment plans for both the
adult and pediatric populations.
