NSSLHA presents SLP-ABA: Interprofessional Collaboration for Supporting Children with ASD
Who Should Attend?
This program is appropriate for professional speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and for SLP students with an interest in interprofessional collaboration (IPC). The specific focus will be on IPC in settings where professionals in applied behavior analysis (ABA) share overlapping responsibilities with SLPs in the service of individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD).
Program Summary
Individuals with ASD present with a spectrum of challenges, and it takes a village of caring professionals to support their spectrum of needs. SLP and ABA professionals are important members of that village, and constructive IPC is crucial to quality service delivery. However, the data indicate that SLP-ABA collaboration is not always without challenges. Some challenges arise from insufficient information about the science of ABA and about the qualifications of ABA service providers. Others arise from a dearth of information about strategies for resolving differences in clinical approaches. The purpose of this presentation is to examine some of these challenges, to provide authentic information about ABA, and to consider strategies used by SLP and ABA professionals based on their experiences of successful IPC. Clinical examples will be provided throughout the presentation.
