ABOUT ABOUT

Who Should Attend?
This program is appropriate for speech-language pathologists (SLP) and students currently enrolled in a speech language pathology program who are interested in improving treatment outcomes for children and adults with voice disorders.

Program Summary
Voice problems are the most common communication disorder, impacting approximately 7.5 million people in the USA.  Clients with voice disorders seek vocal rehabilitation facilitated by you, the SLP.  The main goal of voice therapy is to optimize the dynamic interactions between the respiratory, laryngeal, and resonating sub-systems for an improved vocal output across all communication tasks.  Considering that each client presents with unique anatomy and physiology of phonation, we need the flexibility to determine the most effective voice production technique that will be used in therapy.  We also need a voice therapy model that will facilitate generalization and maintenance of the “new” voice.  The Global Voice Therapy Model (GVTM) is dedicated to achieving and maintaining the “new” voice in all communication tasks independent of a specific voice production technique.  The purpose of this presentation is to explore the GVTM.  Topics will include: description of voice, a review of voice assessment including low-tech and high-tech options, components and application of the GVTM in children and adults with video demonstrations, and an opportunity for practice using the GVTM with patient examples.

Learner Objectives
Participants will be able to:
1.  Describe voice production and options for low-tech and high-tech voice assessment.
2.  Describe the components parts of the GVTM.
3.  Apply the GVTM to clinical practice.
4.  Identify appropriate use of the GVTM in patient examples and self-practice.
